This month we have been practicing to use castanets.

The children have been getting used to using them with two hands.

At first they just enjoyed to randomly click them together,

but quickly learnt  to follow the rhythm being played on the piano.

We alternated between following the music, then allowing a period for rapid clicking.

They seemed to try to click them as rapidly as possible. It became somewhat of a clicking race!

Castanets have a long history of use, and are used in many cultures around the world.

Ancient Roman, Moorish, Ottoman, Spanish and Italian music has utilized them.

Traditionally they are made from wood.

The name castanets derives from the Spanish word for chestnut, castano.

Maybe wooden castanets sound better than ones made from plastic!

 

(今月からカスタネット遊びをしています。

子どもたちは両手で演奏することに慣れてきています。

はじめは、好きなように叩いていた子どもたちですが、すぐにピアノの音に合わせてリズムよく演奏しようとしています。

みんなで音楽に合わせるときと、たくさん素早く叩くときとを交互に楽しみました。

子どもたちはできるだけ早く叩こうとしているようで、なんだかカスタネット競争みたいでした！

 

カスタネットには長い歴史があって、いろいろな世界の文化に関わっています。

古代ローマやムーア、オスマン、スペイン、イタリアの音楽などはカスタネットを使っています。

伝統的なものは木製で、カスタネットという名前はスペイン語で「栗」というcastanoから派生しているんですよ。

やっぱり木製のものはプラスティックのものよりいい音が出るんでしょうね！）
