Yesterday, a mobile zoo visited Ishida kindergarten. It is called the Children’s Zoo, and takes animals to many different schools so that children can experience being with a variety of different animals. Students are able to view, pet, hold, and even feed the animals. The animals were brought to Ishida in trucks. After arriving in the yard, the zookeepers set up some temporary pens by using portable metal fences. They also put some pegs into  the ground to hold tethers for the larger animals.

A selection of different farm-type and pet animals were available to see. We saw a pony, a donkey, goats, sheep, geese, chickens, ducks, rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters and turkeys. There was even a small white mouse, and a long green snake. Most were kept open in the yard, but the mouse and snake were kept away in a box. These two creatures were displayed to separate groups of children by one of the zookeepers.

Everyone had brought food to the school to feed to the animals. The food was separated by type into large buckets. There were vegetables and fruit, such as carrots, cabbages, sweet potatoes, greens, apples, bananas, and persimmons. There was also lots of bread.

Before the children could enter the enclosure, a zookeeper gave the children some simple rules to follow. These rules were to keep the students safe, as well as to avoid scaring the animals. Firstly, when feeding the animals, they should not point any of their fingers at the animals. Instead they should use both of their hands together, similar to a shallow bowl. Secondly, they should not pat the large animals on their bottoms. A pony, donkey, or goat might get surprised by this action and give a backwards kick. Lastly, they should not run in the enclosures, or make loud noises.

The children could then enter the yard where the animals were waiting. Most seemed really excited, but some were a little apprehensive. They soon settled in to being close to the animals, and were often seen trying to pat the animals. The larger animals did frighten some students, especially the goat with its large pointy horns. The cute furry animals were popular. A lot of kids were asking to hold the guinea pigs. I had to chase many of the guinea pigs, as they were a little difficult to catch!!

It was really great fun to see the animals from the mobile zoo. We are so grateful that they could attend Ishida kindergarten and show us a variety of wonderful creatures.

(昨日，こども動物園と呼ばれる，移動動物園が石田幼稚園にやってきました。この動物園はたくさんの幼稚園を巡っており，子ども達は様々な動物たちと仲良くなれます。子ども達は動物を見たり，なでたり，抱っこしたり，エサをあげたりすることが出来ます。動物達はトラックに乗って石田幼稚園にやってきました。園庭に到着した後，飼育員さんは柵を立て，また，大きな動物達のつなぎ縄を繋ぐ為の杭を設置していました。

動物達は柵の中でタイプごとに分けられていました。私たちは，子馬・ロバ・ヤギ・羊・ガチョウ・ニワトリ・アヒル・ウサギ・モルモット・ハムスター・七面鳥，さらには小さな白いネズミや長ーい緑色のヘビまで見ることが出来ました。ほとんどの動物たちは園庭にいたのですが，ネズミとヘビはカゴの中に入っていました。この二匹の動物だけ他の動物と分けられており，飼育員さんによって一人ずつ見せてもらったんですよ。

子ども達はみんな動物たちのエサとなる食べ物を幼稚園に持ってきてくれました。食べ物は大きなバケツの中に種類ごとに分けました。ニンジンやキャベツ，サツマイモ，葉野菜，リンゴ，バナナ，そしてカキ等，たくさんの野菜や果物がありました。加えてたくさんのパンもです。

子ども達が囲いの中に入る前に，飼育員さんからいくつかのルールを教えて頂きました。これらのルールは，子ども達が安全に楽しめるのと同時に，動物たちも怖がることがないようにする為のものです。初めに，動物たちにエサをあげる時は指を口元に立ててはいけないということです。その代わりに，両手をお皿に見立てて，その上にエサを置いてあげます。二つ目は，大きい動物はお尻から撫でてはいけないということです。子馬やロバ，ヤギたちはこの行動をしてしまうと驚いてしまい，後ろにキックをしてしまうかもしれないからです。最後は，囲いの中では走ったり大きな声を出さないということです。

子ども達は，動物たちが待っている囲いの中でへ入ることが出来ました。多くの子ども達はとても楽しそうにしている様子だったのですが，何人かの子ども達は少し不安そうにしている様子が見られました。子ども達はすぐに動物達に近寄ることができ，動物達を撫でようとする姿も見られました。大きな動物は子ども達を少し怖がらせました。特に，ヤギの尖った角がそう思わせますね。毛皮のような可愛い動物達は人気がありました。多くの子ども達は，モルモットを抱っこしたいとお願いしていました。私もたくさんのモルモットを追いかけましたが，抱っこするのは難しかったです！！

こども動物園は本当に楽しかったです。子ども動物園が石田幼稚園に来てくれ，様々な動物達を見させてくださり，本当に感謝します。
