Yesterday the children on the international courses – Bear and Rabbit classes – planted some flower seeds in our school yard. There are some flower beds located at the bottom of the yard, and one of these is shared by the international classes. On this occasion we planted sunflower seeds and celosia seeds. I was well aware of sunflowers, but I did not know the name celosia beforehand. On checking about this flower, I found that this species is called common cockscomb.

Firstly, we prepared the soil by leveling it a little, and then dug some rows of shallow holes with a trowel. Each child was given a few sunflower seeds to place in the holes. About two to three were put into each hole. To my surprise the sunflower seeds were bright blue in colour! I assume that this was to make them easily recognizable and to dissuade people from eating them. We then covered the seeds over with some soil.

Next we made a few shallow trenches. This time we gave the students some celosia seeds. These are very small black seeds, so are really easy to lose. In fact, they are smaller in size than sesame seeds! The children had to be careful not to drop the seeds onto the ground before they sprinkled them over the trenches. Finally, we watered the seeds with water from watering cans. The teachers explained that the seeds would “drink” the water and would grow up to become beautiful flowers.

We are all anticipating the time when we see the first flower shoots breaking through the ground, and following that, the wonderful display of the sunflowers and celosia!

(昨日，ベアークラスとラビットクラスの子どもたちは，園庭の花壇に花の種を植えました。園庭にはいくつかの花壇があるのですが，そのうちの一つをインターコースで一緒に使います。今回はヒマワリの種と，ケイトウの種を植えました。私は，sunflowers；ヒマワリは知っていたのですが， celosia という花の名前は知りませんでした。この花を調べてみると， common cockscomb；ケイトウ と呼ばれていることが分かりました。

初めに，土を少し盛り上げて準備をし，こてを使って浅い穴を一列に掘りました。子どもたちはヒマワリの種をもらい，穴に入れていきました。それぞれの穴には２～３つの種が入りました。驚いたことに，なんとヒマワリの種は青色だったのですよ！これは，種だと簡単に認識することと，人が間違って食べてしまわないようにする為なのではないかと思います。その後，種の上に土をかぶせました。

次に，私たちは浅い溝を作りました。今回はケイトウの種です。ケイトウの種はとても小さな黒色の種で，簡単になくなってしまいそうです。実際，ゴマ粒より小さいのですよ！子どもたちは，種を溝に入れる前に地面に落としてしまわないように注意しなければなりませんでした。最後に，じょうろで種に水をあげました。先生たちは，種はお水をいっぱい飲んできれいなお花たちになるよ，と説明しました。

土から芽を出して最初の花が咲き，それに続いてどんどん，ヒマワリとケイトウの美しい花がいっぱいになる時を，私たちは楽しみにしています！
