Restaurant Role Play.

Today, all the students at Ishida Kindergarten have been participating in a restaurant role-playing game. The children could buy pancakes and fruit juice at a pretend restaurant held upstairs in our hall.

They used toy money that they had previously made. The money was held within wallets that they had produced during craft time. The rabbit class and Tanpopo class had made “cat” wallets, but other classes had produced different designs on their wallets. Year 1 students had fifty yen to spend – five ten-yen coins. Customers had to listen carefully to how much items cost, and then pay out the correct value of toy coins.

Tsubaki class cooked the pancakes and staffed the restaurant. They took the orders, delivered the food, and cleaned up afterwards. They did a really good job and provided fast and efficient service. Staff were always checking to see how the customers were enjoying the food, and were ready to clean up the plates and cutlery when children had finished eating.

Tanpopo class went to the restaurant first, Momo class and Rabbit class then went together, and finally Tsubaki class could take their turn.

Most of the students thought that the pancakes were really delicious! They enjoyed the experience of attending the special Ishida restaurant! Many of the students wanted more. Unfortunately, they could only have one pancake each – any more and they really would not have wanted to eat their lunches.

Here are some English phrases that you might hear inside a restaurant:

“WELCOME” – Hello!”

“HOW ARE YOU?” – “I am fine, thank you”.

“Pancakes, please” – “HERE YOU ARE!”

“Orange juice, please” – “HERE YOU ARE!”

“Thank you” – “YOU ARE WELCOME”.

“It’s yummy!!!”

“HOW WAS THE FOOD?” “It was delicious”

“GOODBYE!” – “Goodbye!”

“PLEASE COME AGAIN!!!”.
