Hello everyone! Can you believe it is already February? Time goes by so quickly.

We are nearing the end of the school year. I thought it would be nice to give an update for the Rabbit students’ progress.

Lately we have been working hard on reading and writing. For writing, every day we choose a letter to work on. The students are given a worksheet to practice on. They trace the letter a few times and then write it by themselves. They are also asked to trace a word which begins with the letter, and to circle the correct letter in a group. We then ask them to write their names.

There are 26 letters in the English alphabet. Since each letter has an uppercase (big) and lowercase (small) version, this means there are 52 different characters. We are currently on letter P in the alphabet.

Some letters are trickier than others. Generally I am happy with their progress. They are holding the pencil correctly. They are getting very good at tracing. They can look at a letter and copy it quite well. Mostly they have memorized how to write their names by themselves.

This has of course also helped their reading practice. They are able to spell out a word, even if they can’t fully read it. This is rather impressive I think. Spelling is an important skill that will lead to reading.

We are also preparing for Setsubun Day. The students made cups decorated with Oni faces. They will keep their beans in there to throw at the Oni. Please wish them luck to repel the evil demons!

もうすぐ今年度も終わりです。そこでラビット組の子どもの様子をお知らせしたいと思います。

最近私たちは読み書きを頑張っています。書きでは，毎日１文字取り組みます。練習用のプリントをもらって，何回かアルファベットをなぞって書き，その後自分たちで書きます。そしてその文字から始まる言葉のつづりもなぞり，いくつかの中から正しい文字に丸を付けます。そして最後に自分の名前を書くように伝えます。

英語のアルファベットには２６文字あります。すべてに大文字と小文字がありますから，５２通りの文字があるということです。今私たちはPを行っています。

中には少し難しい文字がありますが，子どもたちの成長は喜ばしいものです。みんな鉛筆をきちんと持っています。なぞることがとても上手になってきました。文字を見て上手に書き写すことができます。子ども達はほとんど自分の名前を自分で書けるようになってきました。

これはもちろん読みの練習にも役立ちます。みんな文字を読めなくても，スペルを言うことが出来ます。これにはとても驚きです。読みに繋げるためにスペルを言うことはとても重要なスキルだと思います。

そして私たちは節分の準備も出来ています。子ども達は鬼の顔のコップを作り，鬼に投げるための豆をいれる予定です。みんなが無事に鬼を祓えるように祈っていてください！
