Today we performed omochi tsuki at Ishida kindergarten. This is the pounding of a special type of rice to produce omochi (rice cake). All the students got the chance to watch the preparation of the omochi at the front of the school. The oldest class, Tsubaki, actually participated in pounding the rice with the large wooden mallet (kine), whilst the drivers manipulated and folded over the mound of rice in the stone mortar (usu). The teachers also each had a go at pounding the rice. In total we had two rounds of students eagerly watching the event.

After the rice cake (omochi) was finished, the children could each get a small ball of it to hold and feel back at their classrooms. It is very sticky, stretchy and elastic!! Beforehand, they of course had to make sure that their hands were really clean and that they had powdered their hands with rice flour. Finally they had the chance to eat the omochi. They simply enjoyed it with a small amount of sugar. All seemed to agree that it was a fun activity, and that the omochi was really delicious.

Each student could take home three omochi rice cakes. Hopefully they will share them with all of their family members.

(今日は石田幼稚園でお餅つきを行いました。これは特別な種類のお米（もち米）をぷくっと膨らんだおもち（ライスケーキ）にする為のものです。全園児が園の玄関で行われたお餅つきの準備から見ることが出来ました。運転手さんが臼の中に入っている餅を折りたたんだり水分を付けたりし，年長児のつばきクラスさんのみ杵を使ってお餅をつきました。先生たちも一人ずつお餅をつくことが出来たのですよ。最終的に今回は，子ども達の熱心な見学から，２回にわたってお餅つきを行えました。

お餅つきが終わった後，子ども達はそれぞれ小さいサイズのお餅をもらい，それぞれのクラスへ持ち帰りました。お餅はとても手につきやすかったですが，のびーっとしていて弾力性がありました！！もちろんあらかじめ，子ども達は手をよくよくきれいに洗い，打ち粉を手に付けました。そしてついにお餅を実食！子ども達はお砂糖を付けて，本当に楽しみながらお餅を食べていました。お餅つきは本当に楽しいイベントで，そしてとても美味しかったですよ。

子ども達は，お土産としてそれぞれ３つずつお餅を家へ持って帰ることが出来ました。お家の方と楽しんで一緒に食べてもらえたらいいなと思います。
