Morning Glory Seeds.

On Tuesday, the students in year 3 had the chance to plant morning glory seeds in the school yard. Asagao is actually called Japanese morning glory in English, and it seems to be a very popular flower of the summertime.

Asagao translates as “morning face”, but implies the “beauty of a morning face”.

In English, morning glory means the beauty and wonder of the morning. So, they are rather similar in that regard.

Each student was given a green plant pot that had their class and name written on. Firstly, they had to line the bottom of the pots with a folded tissue, then carry the pots outside to the yard.

In the yard, they had to put a few scoops of sand into the bottom of the pots. This would aid with water drainage. Then use scoops to fill the pots with soil up to a visible line near to the rims.

Next they had to poke holes into the soil to enable the seeds to be planted. The children used their index fingers to make five holes. Each time just going down to the first joint of their fingers.

They placed five morning glory seeds in the holes, and covered the holes up by gently spreading the soil about.

Finally, they sprinkled a little sand over the top.

All of the pots were lined up near to the fence, where they can receive some sunlight. The helper students will use watering cans to water the seeds daily.

We are all looking forward to seeing the plants grow up and then, later on, bloom.

I wonder what glorious colours we will be able to see??

アサガオは英語で’Japanese Morning Glory(ジャパニーズ モーニング グローリー)’と言います。
