The children in year 3 of Ishida Kindergarten have been writing letters for their grandparents this month.

The letters are to say thank you for all the help that the grandparents have given to the children and their families over many years.

The students could select a piece of either light blue or pink paper and then had to write a brief greeting on it.

In the Lion class we wrote both ‘Thank you’ in English, and arigatou in Japanese hiragana. In the Tsubaki class the children wrote a short sentence in Japanese. They could then draw pictures on the sheets using colour pens.

Many colourful designs were created. They could choose to draw something that they like, or they could use their imagination to think up something new.

Many of the students in the Lion class really love Pokémon; so drew characters from those cartoons!

The letters will be enclosed in the self-addressed envelopes that the children previously took home to be addressed. They will then be mailed out to the grandparents using the postal service.

Respect for the Aged Day now always falls on the third Monday of September. This year, it will fall on September 20th. This specific National Holiday has been held since 1966, and is a great way to honour the contribution that grandparents and the elderly have made.

I hope that all the grandparents really enjoy reading the letters and looking at the wonderful pictures!!!

When you meet your grandparents, please say:

“Thank you, grandma!!”.

“Thank you, grandpa!!”.

“You are so great!!”.

（年長組の子どもたちは今月、おじいさん・おばあさんへお手紙を書きました。“いつもありがとう”と感謝を伝えるためのお手紙です。

水色または桃色の紙に鉛筆で文章を書きます。Lion組では英語で“Thank you.”、そして日本語で“ありがとう”と書きました。つばき組では“げんきですか”“いつもありがとう”などの文を書きました。その後、空いているところに水性ペンで絵や模様を描きました。

そして…カラフルなお手紙が完成しました！みんな気持ちをこめて、文章と絵を描きましたよ。Lion組では“ポケモン”が大人気なので、キャラクターを描いたお友達が多かったですよ！

みんなが丁寧に書いたお手紙は、自分で封筒に入れて封をします。封筒には、お家の人がおじいさん・おばあさんの住所を書いてくれました。そしておじいさん・おばあさんの家へと送ります。

“敬老の日”は9月の第3月曜日にある祝日です。今年の敬老の日は20日です。1966年から祖父母や高齢者を敬愛し、長寿を祝う日として制定されています。

みんなのおじいさん・おばあさんが素敵なお手紙を読んでとても喜んでいることと思います。

おじいさん・おばあさんに会った時には、「おじいさん、ありがとう！」「おばあさん、ありがとう！」「いつもありがとう！」と言ってあげてくださいね。
