Every day at Ishida kindergarten the children have some time to free play within their classrooms. Such time is usually available after they arrive at school in the morning, and after finishing their lunches, but it can also be scheduled at other times. During free play children can use their imaginations and be creative with the items available in the classrooms. They can improve their social skills, whilst gaining a better understanding of the world around them.

Free play involves playing with toys, blocks, and puzzles, as well as role-playing, reading books, drawing pictures and colouring them with crayons, and using clay. Sometimes the children want to quietly focus on an activity, but at other times they want to be more physically active.

In the Rabbit class, the students often make items from blocks and create stories based on what they have made. I regularly join in with some activities and produce a few objects for them. The children might suggest something for me to build, or I choose something by myself. I have made houses, rockets, bridges, robots, helicopters, planes, boats, trains, cars, trucks, buses, etc. The children really seem to like making buses, houses and beds. With smaller blocks, they have produced flowers, cameras, and various items of food.

It is interesting to see how they have progressed with their role-playing skills. At the beginning of the school year, they mainly played with the toy food and the model cooker. But, by the end of the year, they could prepare an imaginary restaurant, and serve up some ‘food’ that they prepared! They also make up their own games, such as rolling circular foam blocks down a slope at a target or through a tunnel.

I sometimes put in a few subtle hits to increase their use of English. It is especially useful to reinforce vocabulary and structures that we have been learning during English lesson time. For example, after they had made some seats at a pretend hospital, I asked them: “What does she do?”, and they could reply: “She is a nurse”. One student was a ‘nurse’ treating a ‘patient’.

Free play is such an important time of the day. The students can imagine and create many new ideas in their minds. They can relax, be active, and interact with their fellow classmates. For me, it is also rewarding to see how the students are growing, and making progress with their English.

（石田幼稚園では毎日自由遊びの時間があります。たいてい朝の登園後と給食後にありますが、そのほかの時間に組まれることもあります。自由遊びの時間は、子どもたちは想像力豊かで、保育室のものを使ってクリエイティブになります。そして自分の周りの世界を知っていく大切な学びの機会であります。

自由遊びでは粘土遊びやクレパスでお絵かきや色塗りをしたり絵本を読んだり、ごっこ遊びをしたり、パズルをしたり、ブロックやおもちゃで遊んだりします。

ラビット組では子どもたちはよくブロックで何かを作ってそれを基にお話をつくっています。私もよく参加してみんなのために何か作っています。子どもたちは作ってほしいものを言ったり、私が自分で決めたりしています。今までに家やロケット、橋、ロボット、ヘリコプター、飛行機、ボート、電車、車、バスなどを作りました。子どもたちはバスや家、ベッドを作ることが好きなようです。小さなブロックではお花やカメラ、いろいろなごはんを作りました。

ごっこ遊びでの子どもたちの成長はとてもおもしろいです。年度初めはほとんどままごとセットとクッキング台で遊んでいました。しかし、年度末にはレストランを準備していろいろな食事を提供してくれるようになりました。また、坂道を丸いブロックをトンネルめがけて転がす遊びも作り出しました。

私はたまに子どもの英語力のためにちょっとしたヒントを出すことがあります。それはボキャブラリーや英語の時間に学んでいることの骨組みの強化にとても役立ちます。例えば、子どもたちが病院ごっこで椅子を作った時に「彼女は何をしているの？」と尋ねると、「看護婦さんなの。」と答えることができました。一人の子どもは患者さんを治療している看護婦さんだったのです。

自由遊びは一日の中でもとても大切な時間です。子どもたちは心の中で新しいアイデアをたくさんイメージして作り上げることができます。みんなリラックスしたり活発になったり、クラスのお友達とやり取りをしたりできます。私にとって、子どもたちが成長していく様子や英語力の進歩を見守ることもやりがいがあるものです。）
