Pounding Rice.

At Ishida Kindergarten today we have been making lots of rice cake. All the students could watch the pounding of the rice at the front of the school, and the oldest students could actually join in with the process.

The rice-cake making festival is called mochitsuki in Japanese, and is an important winter event. It is usually held near to the end of the year. Mochi is often eaten to celebrate the coming of the new year.

During two different sessions, students formed around the usu (large stone bowl), and witnessed the process of putting the hot, steamed, mochigome into it, and then pounding it with a kine (a large wooden mallet).

Year 3 students each had the opportunity to pound the rice together with the headmaster (Encho-sensei). They were all wearing their mameshibori headbands that they had decorated with dotted patterns. The wooden mallet is heavy, but the students all tried hard to hit the rice frequently and with lots of power.

After the event the rice cake was divided up and placed in bags.
Each student could then take three rice cakes home.
I am sure that everyone will enjoy eating the special Ishida rice cake!!

(本日石田幼稚園では,もちつきが行われました。年長組のお友だちが餅をつき,その様子を小さい組のお友だちが見てくれていました。
 ライスケーキは日本語でお餅つきと言われ,冬の伝統行事です。多くの場合,年末に行われます。新年をお祝いして食べられることが多いですね。
二つのグループに分かれて行われたお餅つき。子どもたちは,臼の周りを囲み,蒸されて熱々のもち米を臼の中に入れて,杵でつきました。
年長組の子どもたちは,園長先生と共に餅をつく機会がありました。子どもたちはみんな豆絞り(子どもたちがドット模様を描き入れて手作りです。)を頭に巻き,取り組みました。杵は重かったですが,子どもたちは一生懸命に力を込めてつくことが出来ました。
みんなでついたお餅は,お土産としてお家に持って帰っています。
石田幼稚園で作った特別なお餅,みんなきっと喜んで食べてくれるでしょう!!
