Sweet Potato Digging

One characteristic of an effective school is letting their students experience real-life scenarios first-hand. Given that, knowledge and learning should not be always limited to the four corners of the classroom. That is why field trips are crucial in the educational system nowadays. Surely, an apple bought from a supermarket tastes sweet, but wouldn’t it taste sweeter if they picked it themselves?

On October 3rd and 4th, of 2022, the students of Ishida Kindergarten decided to go on a field trip- Sweet Potato Digging. The older students went on the first day while the younger students went on the latter day aforementioned. It was a fine day and everyone seemed so excited. When they arrive at the location, they were warmly welcomed by the owner of the farm. They were given tools like small shovels to be used for digging, and water is readily available for hygiene after the activity. After a few minutes of digging, students’ faces looked hot and sweaty but is nothing compared to the look in their faces when they pulled out something huge (sweet potatoes) under the ground. The activity ended with each classes’ group photo.

If there is something that the teachers and staffs of Ishida Kindergarten wanted their students to take in this trip, it is to let them experience first-hand the labor of this profession and to make them realize and appreciate the hard work of the people behind all the food serve to them.
